SEND:  NORTH AMERICA is a strategy to plant churches across North America implemented by the North American Mission Board (NAMB). This strategy meshes with the Eagle’s Landing Frontier Awaits! strategy for church planting. As a way to be involved in a significant way, Eagle’s Landing chose to partner with SEND:  MIAMI.

Miami is a city of paradoxes. It’s often viewed as a 76-degree paradise of glitz, bling, flaunted wealth, South Beach nightclubs, bay-front mansions, flashy cars, fast boats – all part of the glamorous “life-in-the-fast-lane” for the celebrities, pro athletes and rich who live here.

A 2009 study of 73 world cities by Swiss bank UBS ranked Miami as the richest city in the United States, and the world’s fifth-richest in terms of purchasing power. Forbes Magazine ranked Miami as the No. 3 most overpriced city in the United States. Nearby West Palm Beach was No. 6 and Fort Lauderdale was No. 17.

But paradoxically in 2010, Miami was also No. 6 – with over a fourth of its population – on the list of large U.S. cities with citizens below the federal poverty line, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Only Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, Milwaukee and St. Louis ranked higher in terms of citizens living at the federal government-established poverty income level.

“Even as you drive around and see the big, beautiful buildings downtown, the big homes and the people driving their BMW or Lexus, 26 percent of the people are in poverty in Miami,” says Gary Johnson, director of missions (DOM) for the Miami Baptist Association for the last five years.

Church to Church Partnership

Eagle’s Landing is glad to partner with The Anchor Church in the greater Miami area in a church-to-church partnership. It’s just another way to personalize what God is doing in Miami. Erik Bennet and team lead The Anchor Church, having launched officially in the Summer of 2012. Erik, shown with his family above, is native to South Florida and eager to extend the gospel to those God puts in his path. The Anchor’s mission can be summarized in these simple statements:

  • Make Christ known.
  • Commit to godliness.
  • Serve the city.
  • Change the culture.
